About This Experience

Gonarezhou — 'Place of Elephants' in Shona — is Zimbabwe's second-largest national park and its best-kept secret. Red sandstone cliffs tower above ancient riverbeds. Massive elephant herds move through mopane woodland. Nyala, sable, wild dog and lion share a wilderness that receives a fraction of the visitors of Hwange or Mana Pools. The Chilojo Cliffs at sunset are one of the great sights in southern Africa. For travellers who have done the main circuit and want something genuinely different, Gonarezhou is the answer.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

The Journey

Day 1

Arrive Gonarezhou

Fly to Harare and connect via charter or road to Gonarezhou Bush Camp in the Runde River area. Arrive in time for lunch. Late afternoon game drive — your first encounter with the red sandstone landscape and the massive elephant herds that made this park famous. Sundowner beside the river. Dinner at camp.

Day 2

Runde River & Chilojo Cliffs

Full day exploring the Runde River area. The Chilojo Cliffs rise 180 metres above the floodplain — in the afternoon light they burn orange and red. Lion, elephant and buffalo congregate along the river as the dry season progresses. Evening drive back to camp through the mopane woodland.

Day 3

Walking Safari — Into Elephant Country

Morning walking safari with an armed professional guide into the areas frequented by Gonarezhou's legendary elephant bulls — some carry the largest tusks remaining in Zimbabwe. The intimacy of approaching elephant on foot is unlike any game drive experience. Afternoon by the river.

Day 4

Save Valley & Wild Dog Territory

Drive east to explore the Save River confluence area. Gonarezhou is one of the best parks in Zimbabwe for African wild dog — the packs range widely and encounters are memorable. Game drive along the river for nyala, waterbuck and crocodile. Return to camp.

Day 5

Final Morning & Departure

Last morning drive in the golden light. Breakfast in the bush. Transfer to the airstrip for your charter flight out, or begin the road journey north to Harare or east to the Mozambique border.
