INLAND SEA · HOUSEBOAT
The world's largest man-made lake by volume. Tigerfish, houseboats, dramatic sunsets, and the dead-tree forest of Matusadona.
Why Lake Kariba
Lake Kariba is the largest man-made lake on Earth by volume — 5,580 square kilometres of inland sea on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border, formed when the Zambezi was dammed in 1959.
The drowning of the Zambezi forest left a unique landscape: thousands of dead trees still standing in the shallows, their branches white against the sky and the water. Sunsets here have a quality you don't find elsewhere in Africa.
Kariba is also Africa's premier tigerfish destination, the home of houseboat safari, and the gateway to Matusadona National Park — a wild buffalo and black rhino territory accessible only by boat.
“If you've never been on a houseboat in Africa, do this. It's the way the country was designed to be seen — slow, from the water, with the sunsets to yourself.”

On the map
The houseboat at Kariba was the most romantic three days of our 25-year marriage. The sunsets are not exaggerated.

Frequently Asked
It's the iconic way. 3-5 nights aboard is the classic. Lodges on Bumi Hills or Spurwing Island are alternatives if you want a fixed base.
No. Bilharzia is endemic; crocodiles and hippos make it unsafe regardless. Plunge pool on the houseboat upper deck is the alternative.
Yes — tigerfish from September. Catch-and-release encouraged. Tackle and guides provided by all houseboats.
Different. Hwange is land-based Big Five. Kariba is water-based + black rhino + dramatic landscape. We recommend both for travellers with 10+ nights.
Yes — by boat. The houseboats anchor in the dead-tree forest in the late afternoon. Photography masterclass.
