Overview

The whole country in ten nights, ending where the story started rather than where the game is. Two nights at Batonka to ease in, with the Falls, the rainforest walk and the Zambezi's long evenings. Three nights at Hwange Bush Camp next, in the elephant heartland, with drives morning and evening and walking where the guiding allows. Then Mana Pools, and three nights at Vundu, which is as wild as Zimbabwe gets. Walking among elephant in the winterthorn forest, canoeing the channels when the level suits, and very few other vehicles. The granite closes it, and this is the part that makes the trip. Two nights at Matobo Hills Lodge, ours, tracking white rhino on foot, reading San rock art with a guide who grew up here, and a private morning at the UNESCO-listed Khami Ruins outside Bulawayo, usually with nobody else on the site. Most itineraries finish at the Falls. This one finishes with something older. Private throughout, maximum eight guests. When to go: April to early November, while the Mana Pools camps are open.

Itinerary

Day by day.

VICTORIA FALLS
Day 1

Day 1: Arrive Victoria Falls

Day 1: Arrive Victoria Falls

Met on arrival and taken to Batonka Guest Lodge. The afternoon stays loose: settle in, then a sunset cruise on the Zambezi above the lip of the Falls if the light is worth it.

BATONKA GUEST LODGE

Day 2

Day 2: Victoria Falls

Day 2: Victoria Falls

The rainforest walk along the rim, timed for the light and the spray, with a guide who can read the geology as well as the view. The afternoon is yours.

BATONKA GUEST LODGE

HWANGE NATIONAL PARK
Day 3

Day 3: On to Hwange National Park

Day 3: On to Hwange National Park

Into Hwange and Hwange Bush Camp, with time for an afternoon game drive before dark. The waterhole in front of camp usually does the rest.

HWANGE BUSH CAMP

Day 4

Day 4: Hwange National Park

Day 4: Hwange National Park

A full day in the park. Out early while it is cool, back through the heat of the middle of the day, out again into the evening.

HWANGE BUSH CAMP

Day 5

Day 5: Hwange National Park

Day 5: Hwange National Park

A second full day, which is where the difference shows. Hwange holds one of the largest elephant populations in Africa and in the dry months they come to the pans in numbers that are hard to describe.

HWANGE BUSH CAMP

MANA POOLS
Day 6

Day 6: On to Mana Pools

Day 6: On to Mana Pools

North into Mana Pools and Vundu Camp. The floodplain is the point here: winterthorn forest, dust and low light, with a first drive before dark.

VUNDU CAMP

Day 7

Day 7: Mana Pools

Day 7: Mana Pools

A walking morning, which is when Mana is at its best. Few African parks put you on foot among elephant the way this one does.

VUNDU CAMP

Day 8

Day 8: Mana Pools

Day 8: Mana Pools

Canoeing the Zambezi channels if the level suits, drifting past elephant on the bank. Afternoons are for the river, or for sitting still.

VUNDU CAMP

MATOBO HILLS
Day 9

Day 9: On to Matobo Hills

Day 9: On to Matobo Hills

South into the Matobo Hills and Matobo Hills Lodge. Settle in, then sundowners from the granite with the whole valley below you.

MATOBO HILLS LODGE →

Day 10

Day 10: Matobo Hills

Day 10: Matobo Hills

On foot at first light, tracking white rhino with a ranger. Later, San paintings read off a cave wall by a guide who grew up in these hills.
