The Blue Pool of Chinhoyi

Zimbabwe’s cobalt-blue cave pool, a proper day trip from Harare

Overview

The Sleeping Pool at Chinhoyi is the kind of place photographs get accused of exaggerating: a collapsed limestone cavern holding water so deep and so still it reads as solid cobalt. It sits about two hours north-west of Harare, which makes it the capital's best true day trip — far enough to feel like an expedition, close enough to be home for dinner. This private day runs the caves properly: the descent to the main pool, the dark cave for those who want it, time to simply look, and a picnic lunch before the drive back. Park entry is included; current ZimParks fees are confirmed at booking. Six to seven hours door to door in a private vehicle with your guide. Requested and confirmed within 24 hours.

The day

How the day runs.

A private day to the Chinhoyi Caves: the descent to the Sleeping Pool, the dark cave, a picnic lunch, and the drive home.

North-west to the caves

Morning pickup from your Harare hotel and roughly two hours north-west through farming country to Chinhoyi. The descent to the Sleeping Pool with your guide, the dark cave for the willing, and unhurried time at the viewpoints.

Picnic and the road home

Picnic lunch near the caves, a last look at the pool as the light shifts, then the drive back — at your hotel by late afternoon.
