Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg

Arrive into Johannesburg and out to Saxon Hotel. Nothing is asked of you today.
Singita, Matobo and the Cape: Africa at its most polished
Gonarezhou, Khami Ruins, Matobo Hills, Zimbabwe · 14 days · From $25,500 per person · Booked direct with Josh Elliott, owner-operator
Overview
Four of the most polished addresses in southern Africa, and one chapter that money alone will not get you.
A night at the Saxon in Johannesburg to land, then into the private Malilangwe Reserve for three nights at Singita Pamushana: baobab country, big game, and guiding at the level Singita is known for.
Then Zimbabwe's granite. Two nights at Matobo Hills Lodge, ours, tracking white rhino on foot and reading San rock art with a guide who grew up in these hills, with a private morning at the UNESCO-listed Khami Ruins outside Bulawayo. This is the part of the itinerary no other operator can assemble the same way.
Back to South Africa for three nights at Singita Boulders in the Sabi Sand, the most reliable leopard ground in Africa, then four nights at Ellerman House in Cape Town: art, ocean, the mountain and the winelands within easy reach.
Private throughout, maximum eight guests.
When to go: May to October suits the safari legs. Cape Town is warmest from November to April, so October and early November balance both ends.

Itinerary

Arrive into Johannesburg and out to Saxon Hotel. Nothing is asked of you today.

Fly into the private Malilangwe Reserve and Singita Pamushana: baobab country, big game, and guiding at the top of the range.

A full day on Malilangwe. Big game, rock art in the sandstone, and very few other vehicles.

A second day on the reserve, which is private, so a sighting stays yours.

Travel west to the Matobo Hills by the transfers specified in your proposal. Settle into Matobo Hills Lodge, with time for the granite landscape.

On foot at first light, tracking white rhino with a ranger. Later, San paintings read off a cave wall by a guide who grew up in these hills.

Into the Kruger and Singita Boulders, out on the first drive by late afternoon.

Morning and afternoon game drives explore the reserve around Singita Boulders with the lodge guides. Return to the lodge between activities.

A second full day. This is leopard country as much as lion country, and the density rewards the extra night.

Down to Cape Town and Ellerman House: art, ocean and the mountain.

A day for the mountain, the peninsula or the winelands, depending on the weather and your mood.

Another Cape day. The city rewards wandering as much as planning.

A last full day in the Cape. Whichever of the mountain, the peninsula or the winelands you have not yet done, or simply the city before you fly.

A last Cape morning, then the transfer to Cape Town International for your flight home.
